Tech Tip #1
"Ever since a friend of mine turned me on to the Kim Komando Show Electronic Newsletter, I have been getting it once a week. I have a
'Komando' folder on my hard drive to save all the issues I get !
At last count, I have 91 issues saved. They always contain some really
hip tips ! Since I dislike telemarketers so much, I was really thrilled
to read this and hoped Kim would not mind me posting her tip
in the 'Tech Tips' section." - Aj

the Kim Komando Show Electronic Newsletter:
Telemarketers getting you down? Use your computer to get rid of them!
Basically, you use the same process as the TeleZapper, which is advertised on TV.
But this one won't cost you a dime.
The $49.95 TeleZapper emits the special-information tone (SIT) of a
non-working number. Telemarketing software views that number as
non-working, and removes it from its database. You can get the tone
here or on the Internet. The file is named: sit.wav.
To find the file, go to Google, http://www.google.com, and search for "sit.wav".
Once you find the file, play it back through your speakers so you
can record the tone with your answering machine or your voice mail.
[ I have a shortcut on my desk top to the wav file. If I'm offline, I pop it up in media player and I'll play it into the phone. I have not tried this yet, but will update this page when I have. If this works, I'll connect a small speaker to the pc to rest my phone handset on. This may prove to be great fun!]
After the tone, voice your regular message. You don't have to use all
three notes. The first will suffice, so your legitimate callers won't be put off.
There is one downside. While the TeleZapper emits the tone whenever
you answer the phone, this workaround only works when your answering
machine or voice mail answers the call.
